Hi, I'm new to BYC. My name is Michele. I don't have my chickens yet but I joined so I could be prepared. I've been reading through a lot of the information and I love this group. I'm planning on getting 3 chicks in January or February. I do have 2 questions:
1. What breeds would you recommend for someone who has never had chickens before?
2. I live in So Cal in the Norco/Chino area and last month when we had a few days over 110 degrees I wondered about the best chicken breeds for dealing with the heat. What would you recommend?
Thanks!

WELCOME TO BYC.
Look around and make sure yourself at home. This is a very knowledgeable and informative group from around the globe. One suggestion I have, is make sure your read about how and where to post your questions to receive the quickest response in the FORUM section.
We are EGG-CITED you joined us.

First, kudos to you for doing your research before getting your birds, and BYC is a great place to learn.

If your goal is three friendly chicks, I'd choose at least one Speckled Sussex. It is a very old British breed, lovely colored and mine likes to stay close and "help" me with any outdoor project. EE's can provide beautifully colored eggs, and as far as being pretty docile and darned cute, I like Salmon Faverolles with their fluffy face and feathered legs.

In Iowa, chickens have to survive sub-zero weather all the way to above 100-degree temps, and the ones I've suggested have managed to do fine here.

Welcome to the group. Looking forward to seeing what you decide!
