Hello, Michele, and welcome to BYC! Glad you joined.
No matter what breeds you get you will need to provide them with a means to keep cool during your heat waves. Deep shade on damp ground is the best. I also leave a large floor fan running for them and put out large chunks of ice in a shallow plastic bin for them to sip and wade in on hot days.
I'm partial to White Leghorns (WLH), Plymouth Barred Rocks (PBR) and Black Australorps (BA) for personality and great egg laying ability.
Welcome to BYC from Arizona! This is the place to be for all your chicken news, connections to helpful poultry folks and more!
I know Naked Neck do well here in AZ. Just for research you can look at the Murray McMurray online catalog for the breeds that are marked with the sun symbol - also good in confinement symbol. Not that you need to order from there - this is just one of MANY research resources I have used.
I am all for being prepared, it's one if the best ways to start. I've made a lot of mistakes from being inpatient, not researching enough before I got started. So, definitely research all that you can especially for the coop process.
I also live in California but it's getting cold... maybe you can send some sun my way?
Wishing you the best of luck!
