Hi all!
We are a family of 4, who has moved from bonnie Scotland to sunny Portugal last year.
We've just purchased a little bit of land and have been keeping a very small flock of chickens for a few months now.
Once we've moved to the new property and built a bigger chicken run I'd like to experiment with cross breeding and build a flock that would provide both eggs, meat and lots and lots of fun :)
I've got a very old and unused degree in animal husbandry, pretty much all forgotten by now, but it does mean I can deal with genetics side of breeds.
However - I totally lack "hands-on" experience :) Learning on the job!
We've got 6 hens, breeds as far as I can tell are barred rock, coronation sussex (my personal favourite, she's so greedy she reminds me of a labrador), legbar, and 2 black ones with feathery feet (?) plus one small white hen, very flighty.
Our rooster is barred rock, Schmidt.
We've had a couple of broody hens and some success with chicks, but also some fails - for example, all of the sussex hens eggs seem to stop developing at random and legbar ones are infertile.
The aim in the future will be to have flock big enough for 3-4 roosters and keep breeding some pure breds whilst having some fun with crossbreeding as well!
