Hi everyone, we live in West Limerick Ireland. Hubby and I are in our 60's and are renovating a derelict 200 year old cottage in our retirement. Living on site in a caravan.
We've recently taken on two chickens and a rooster from a friend who has a fox problem. The girls we believe are light Sussex/crosses. The boy is a mystery. We aim to get another couple of girls in the next few weeks.
Both are laying almost every day. The girls are lovely, the rooster is beginning to feel his feet. Might need some advice regarding him soon!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
When you tend the chickens, your rooster is a chicken too!, make sure you wear boots and tough jeans. Offer HIM treats to give to HIS girls. If he flogs you, stand there and let him and walk slowly and calmly towards him. If you've worn the proper clothing a good flogging is nothing more than annoying. When flogging does nothing but make you come closer, he will eventually give up.
Don't be a threat to him and he'll eventually come around if he's not overtly human aggressive. If he is, well, @sourland has some good recipes.
