I live in Hempstead Texas and currently have 16 chickens and 3 roosters (that I know of).
I have 5 each of Silkies, Buff Orpingtons, Black Jerseys and 4 Rhode Island Reds. My husband built a really nice 32' coop and run which is located in a fenced area in the pasture. They have it made actually with solar power, auto door, radio, fan for hot days, drop down windows for cold or rainy days, etc.
We had 6 hens at out old house so we are not new to chickens but it has been 5 years or so.
I love the articles on BYC as they are very informative.
