Most people don't give their chickens shots or take them to the vet unless it is a dire emergency. Barnvelders are not sex-link. For most breeds, you can start to tell sex at 4-8 weeks old. Have you started on your coop?
Well that took days of trying to figure out. We finally decided on a coop from Omelet which will come in about 6 weeks. It is insulated and easily cleaned and a friend if mine who has had chickens suggested it. It has wheels so we can move it where we want to and is easy to clean. Hope it will last a long timr. It holds up to 20 birds but we shall see anout that!.

Welcome to BYC @Ankarankar . I love barnevelders. They are my favorite standard breed. They are so gorgeous and lay lovely dark brown eggs. What a wonderful Mother's Day gift. :)
I hope so. I have gotten quite attached to them and have tried to read as much about them as I can. Are they noisy? Broody? Anything I should know about this breed? Thanks in asvance!

Depends on their breeding. Most of mine are fairly quiet and mine their own business. The roosters are always mild, and are generally good all around.

I've had one or two hens go broody but on average they aren't as broody as other breeds like cochins. They don't lay a lot of eggs, but those they do are pretty. They aren't overly friendly, nor skiddish. So a good all around breed with beautiful plumage.

Glad to meet you. Happy Mother's Day surprise!! Best wishes taking care of those chicks! They are quite adorable and we become quite attached to them as they grow - I bet you will too!

You can find some good articles about chick care in the Forum on Raising Chicks, but you can use the SEARCH bar to look for specific questions. You had better get that enterprising near son-in-law to work making you a good coop and run for those babies. They grow up fast!

Some types of Barnevelders can be sexed by patterns, but apparently, some can't. Here is an article about it. There are several people here who swear by the breed, but apparently, you have to get the right type within the breed.

Deep breath! Incorporate the chick routine into the routine you already have... much less stressful. :hugs
