Glad to meet you, Carolyn. There was a discussion about dogs herding chickens not too long ago, and it mainly showed that people had a lot of different opinions. but you might want to look it over. It's not too long a conversation. Discussions pop up periodically, and a lot of conversations about training dogs to reduce their prey drive so they can co-exist with the chickens and not chase them endlessly (which would stress them out if not kill them!)

Why did you want a dog to herd your chickens?

Just curious, why do you need a dog to herd the chickens? If you're worried about them coming back to the coop at night, as long as they know the coop is their home, they put themselves to bed every evening, no need for a dog.
I would be concerned that an Aussie would be a little too intense for the birds.
