Glad to meet you! There are articles you can read about gardening with chickens. The upshot is, really that chickens will destroy your garden because they eat everything and scratch and dig holes all around for dust bathing and bug hunting. I grow extra greens, veggies and herbs for my chickens that I am cutting (or sometimes uprooting) and giving to them now.

They will, however, be your best friends after harvest time, when you can turn them loose to root through the remains of your garden and turn compost into the ground for next season. Some people keep the chickens cooped up (hah) and others fence their garden to keep the chickens OUT until after harvest.

They produce COPIOUS amounts of manure that you should be composting through the year and your will have beautiful compost for your garden. Don't put fresh chicken poop directly on any of your plants because it's just too high in nitrogen and will burn your plants.

And any food plants need to have chicken poop that's been composted or aged:
no later than 90 days prior to harvest of non-ground-contact crops such as trellised tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers;
and no later than 120 days prior to harvest of ground-contact crops such as lettuce, strawberries and carrots

Hello, and welcome to BYC! I'm so glad you decided to join Our friendly and helpful community.
I only let my chickens in the garden area in the fall and wintertime. Otherwise they would eat all my hard work!
