Hey everyone! I'm glad to be here! A little about me: I'm a beginner homesteader, moving slowly toward being as self sufficient as possible. My husband, son, and I live in Alaska, our favorite place in the world, and we love hiking, fishing, hunting, basically anything outdoors! I'm really new to chickens, in fact, I don't have any yet! I want to educate myself before I just jump in unaware. I live in Alaska, so I'm looking for hardy breeds that can handle cold. I also want to get dual purpose birds so I only have to manage one flock for eggs and meat. I'm really excited to get started!

Welcome to our forum! You can make a new thread asking people for breed advice, I'm sure they'll come up with great choices! Since you want to do more research before getting your first chickens, you can take a look at the articles section of out forum, it's a wealth of knowledge just one click away! Make yourself at home here :welcome

Hello, here is one of the most helpful cold weather housing articles I've read: cold-weather-poultry-housing-and-care.72010 And as far as breeds go, Chanteclers were developed in Canada and are well suited for colder temps. You can get other tips from members on your state thread: Alaska

Best wishes with all your homesteading plans!
