We have a three-sided shelter we'll be turning into a coop this weekend and then they will be let to roam free choice during the day on our 18 acres. The shelter falls within a large circle created by our house, driveway, and the horse pasture. We have several neighbors who free range their chickens during the day and haven't had issues.

Have a 'plan B' in mind. Predators will eventually present a problem.
