Hello all I am brand new to chicken keeping! I had gotten my first 5 chicks about 3 months ago, sadly I did not do my research ahead of time about chicken breeds and got a Cornish cross sadly she is no longer with us. But, lesson learned! We did give her the best life possible with lots of treats before...well you know. I loved my first batch so much and learned a ton as I went and now have gotten 8 more chicks (chicken math haha). Currently I have 3 pullets and one cockerel (we think) and now we (my boyfriend and I) have 8 more energetic chicks of varying breeds. We have a mixed flock as I love the variations in color! For the older ones who are about 15 weeks, we have 1 silver lace Wyandotte (Juniper), 2 Plymouth rocks (Mushu and Ferdinand, until yesterday we thought Ferd was a boy but she and Mushu are the same darker color), and a speckled Sussex. For the babies, who are turning 3 weeks tomorrow (well all but 2 Ill get to that later), 2 Saphire Gems, 1 Black Australorp, 1 Americana (Cleoflaptra), I know they aren't a recognized breed and are different than the Ameraucana, 1 Buff Orpington, 2 Prarie Bluebell Eggers, and a Golden Laced Wyandotte. Cleo is the only one out of the newbies who is named because she has absolutely perfect Egyptian winged eyeliner, I'm still working on names for the others, waiting to find a name that fits each personality. Out of the 8, the Orpington and one Saphire are older. Miss orpington is possibly about a week older and the Saphire a few days, the rest were only about a day old as we got them the day they arrived in the store (aug 22). However The older saphire came on the same shipment as the day old babies.
My aboslute favorite aspect, so far, about raising BYC is watching them interact they are a joy to watch. I love their personalities and all their little quirks! I love them running up every time they see me and calling out to let the others know I'm coming to "visit" them. I love my girls!
Some other hobbies of mine include reading and (I know) videogaming (usually playing farming sims/ animal raising games hah). I would love to have a farm one day, but that is just not possible at the time :( . I cope with the farming sims and watching videos etc. I would love to get into gardening, my bf and I just started a flower garden and made our own raised beds I loved it, but I do want to eventually grow our own veggies. One step at a time haha chickens first! Right now it is just my boyfriend and I and our 7 cats (and now 12 chickens). Living with 7 cats is 100% as fun and crazy as it sounds but we take good care of everyone and give them plenty of attention. 5 of them sleep with us (crowded bed) it's fun playing "PET-tress" every night. Currently I work at Starbucks and am working on going back to school through them. They have a program that helps their employees (or as we call it, Partners) go back to school and they pay for almost everything needed to obtain an associates. I found out about BYC through google whenever I had a question about my girls, this was the first website I would go to and have found out a ton so far about raising and keeping chickens. I have been meaning to join for some time now but the thing that made me finally join is one of the new chicks we got isn't doing well so I came here to post about it in an attempt to find out anything I can to help her!
Sorry for the essay and Thank you all for the helpful information!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Very nice introduction! Your flock sounds lovely! I am so glad you are enjoying them, chickens really broadened our horizons, most people have no idea how enjoyable it is to keep them.

Make yourself at home here and if you have any questions about them along the way, be sure to ask.

Welcome to our community!

What a great info! I feel like I almost know you now:hugs. You will have a ball with your chickens. I started out with a very mixed breed. ( only brown egg layers.) I now have leghorns, Easter eggs, cinnamon queens and a breed called smoky pearls. I'm more in it for the eggs than the entertainment now. My 2 leghorns are the sweethearts which is not the norm for that breed. One thing I've learned is they have very individual personalities for SURE. I'm glad they associate YOU with good stuff ( treats, attention, etc.)
Glad you now know what a meat bird is now , I would love to have some cute little chickens but my environment ( extreme cold and heat with WIND ) won't allow that. SE LA VIE .
