Hi ALL, I posted as Native Yard because I have been involved in the nativizing process in Southwestern Ohio for some time and 'the girls' seems to benefit from the abundance of insects and munchable grasses. I have 14 hens, 9 golden comets and 5 brown leg horns. The girls are entering their third year and produce between 12 and 8 eggs daily which are shared with neighbors and friends. We have had a few health issues. One prolapsed vent that sort of healed itself and one death from cold weather (the leghorns seem more sensitive to cold). They have plenty of room in their pen/coop and get out every day (depending on weather). I do need to find a better feed since I have recently learned (please advise) that we should avoid Purina since that seems to be contributing to their dirty butts. I have incrementally learned that raising chickens is more complicated than I first thought so looking forward to the group's expertise.
