Been many, many years since I had chickens. As a kid we had them for eggs and meat. Then @ 20 years ago, we did a couple summers raising chicken for freezer. Now I'm about to retire and feel this is something to keep me busy and provide food and little pocket change. But before I start any serious plans this spring (Im in central Wisconsin), I want to listen and learn how to set up and operate. Also, learn to preserve eggs and meat. Thx!
 
I'm wanting to waterglass eggs. Someone gave me 4 dozen unwashed eggs they'd refrigerated for 2 days. If I get the canning lime tomorrow, could I waterglass these eggs yet? The eggs are clean and unwashed, so I only need to put in lime water, yes? It's my first time trying it. I'm a real rookie! 😀
 
Hi! I've never tried water glassing eggs, but I found a thread you could check out on it. If you use the search function, I'm sure you could find others and I know there are many people willing to help if you have unanswered questions on it!

From what I know, as long as the eggs are unwashed and uncracked and not dirty, they should work fine! I hope it goes well!

Welcome to BYC!
I also live in central Wisconsin- we been having some brutal cold days til this week.
One thing I did was insulate my coop but still have ventilation at the top.
Choosing cold hardy chickens is also helpful.
I did get my chicks from Tractor Supply and had good luck.

I've water glasses eggs. I lost over 250 eggs. Regardless that I always carefully lowered the eggs into the lime solution a few cracked and spoiled the batch. Maybe my batches were too large. I don't know.
I now dehydrate eggs for winter use instead.
