New member, long time reader of posts. I started out raising chickens with my son when he was about 8 or 9 when his older brother brought him home four chicks and two ducklings from TSC, (to give him something to do, lol). He then got into the 4-H poultry program with his pullets and cockerels. Now we continue to raise them to sell eggs, eat eggs, and occasionally sell chickens/chicks. I've always had a connection with chickens as my Grandma Stearns raised chickens and I'd usually be around them, at an early age. My Ma Cole had chickens also and I loved her multicolored collection. I'm now in the process of getting some of those multicolored eggs from my own flock.
As of today, I have 10 laying hens, one rooster, 16 2-month-old chicks and 4-day old chicks with the possibility of more hatching.
I have a few barnyard mixes, (2 yr old Black Amerucana/white leghorn x Marans, Marans x Australorp, Oliver egger x Marans, 8 mo. old RIR x Blk Amerucana/white leghorn), 2 yr old EE, RIR, 2 GLW, and an ISA Brown. Our chicks are BR over BR, English Orpington, EO over California white, and that little roo over the hens.
What I like most are the benefits of their eggs, their companionship, and I enjoy sitting watching them. I am curious about the optional colors of the eggs and their feathers/looks when breeding my chickens. Overall, I like being a chicken owner.
Some of my hobbies include reading my Bible on a daily basis, making quilts and I hand quilt, gardening and raising flowers, and I have a sourdough starter that I use to bake something every week.
I am a Christian. We worship with the congregation at Bagdad church of Christ just up the road from our home and farm. I am married to Eric, (38 yrs in Sept). We live on my husband's family's century farm raising cattle, goats, hay, and chickens. We have three children Nicole, Ethan, and John William; and four grandchildren, Johnny, 5, twin sisters, Caroline and Mattie, 3, and their cousin Abigail Kate, 2. I have a degree in elementary education and enjoyed teaching. I'm a stay-at-home mother/wife. We homeschooled our youngest who had to have multiple surgeries from 2010 to 2018. I make "my" money by selling my eggs and hand quilting for others.
I found BYC while researching one thing or another about chickens. I enjoy reading the posts and gain relative information from them at times. I joined because I wanted to post a comment and was asked to join. I haven't ever tried to post. Finally joined in.
