Hi folks,
My name is Ken. I live in Aroostook County , Maine. I'm retired and decided to grow a few chickens for the fun of it. I purchased 24 Buff Orpington chicks that were hatched in Ohio from a grain store. They are now one month old. While they always have plenty of food, water, and space, five of the chicks are one-half the size of the rest of the flock. They appear healthy and active like the rest of the chickens and developmentally appropriate except for size. Any information /explanation you can share with me as to
why five of my chicks are so small would be appreciated. I've been told that "Runts" sometimes become the best layers.

Could be "runts" or could be your grain store mixed up banty chicks with the Buffs. Oh and by the way...

Well, hello and WELCOME! I'm thinking maybe you've got a few bantam sized chicks there.......Buff Orps are so pretty and they have the softest feathers.......
