I've been using the BYC site for info for a while but just joined today. I live in Decatur GA and have 4 birds that are producing 3 eggs a day. I have a brown leghorn, a white leghorn, a golden sex link, and a black Orpington. The sex link and orpington were hand raised and really friendly. My 3yr old says the orpington is her best friend and carries her around. My Orpington started laying first and lays everyday, some times double yolks.
Of course I built a a coop and run that ended up costing around $500 or more, but loved the work and felt like I was creating my own thing. And of course my birds spend most of the time scratching around the yard. Would love to get more birds but have to wait till my infant gets a little older before I can because I have to hand raise them from chicks and can only do it in the house.
The diffrence between my hand raised birds and the birds I was given that were grown is so pronounced that I don't think I will ever have get another bird that is not hand raised.

Glad you joined us!

Hi and :welcome

Great job with your coop! I always find it impressive when someone can build their own.
I agree with you about the hand-raised chickens, by the way. Ours will follow us and when they were smaller they would sit on our shoulders (now they don't fit... lol)
Our neighbours buy point-of-lay hens and you can really tell, they don't really like people that much. :p

I hope you find any info you need here, and enjoy the site!
