Hi, Grace. Welcome from east central Indiana! My sister-in-law's family all live in Lexington. Beautiful place! We got our chickens when they were a week old. Had them in a wardrobe moving box with chicken wire over the top and a heat lamp in our library. They're great jumpers even when they're just a week old. I think chickens have been the easiest pets we've ever had. Handling them lots when babies makes them so friendly when older. I would sit at the end of the box every morning with my cup of coffee and talk to them and watch them interact. Now, several are laying eggs. :) So exciting! The kids love running out to the coop when they get home from school to see how many we have in the nest boxes. We are getting around 4-6 eggs a day. We have 11 pullets (girls under 1yr. old) that are around 20-22wk. old, 1 cockerel (male under 1yr.), and 4 pullets that are around 16-18wks. old Can't wait until all the girls start laying. All that is to say, you will have a blast. "Chicken TV" is VERY relaxing, too. Never gets old. Best of luck to you on your new venture and God bless you, too!

Howdy from Texas. First I will offer my one-liner for newcomers to raising chickens (or just about any kind of livestock for that matter).

Don't let your lack of experience worry you. You don't need to know a lot. The chickens know all about it!

As to your chickens getting to cold; I suggest you read this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/421122/think-its-too-cold-for-your-chickens-think-again

For a coop you don't really need much. I knocked together a little three-sided shelter (the white structure in this picture) that works just fine for our girls.

Don't let Hollywood fool you. It does get COLD here in Central Texas. I've seen temps below zero, and the girls don't seem to mind. Just keep clean and dry pine shavings in the shelter.

Sidebar: Hinge the roof of the shelter at the open side. Your girls will lay in the back corners. That'll make it easier to collect the eggs.

Keeping chickens for fun and profit is a fun hobby, if you don't make to big a deal out of it.
