What purpose(s) do you want chickens to fill, eggs, meat, pet, show, breeders???

When we know we can help you make choices. If you want great information head for the Learning center?

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Here are a couple of links to some nice chicken breed comparison charts you might like http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html and http://www.albc-usa.org/documents/chickenbreedcomparison.pdf when you have narrowed down your choices, don't forget to check the BYC Reviews section for member reviews on the different breeds. https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/chicken-breeds
For pets, especially for children, Silkies and Cochins are probably the two most popular breeds, they are not very good egg layers but are very friendly. Silkies are rather special and often can not be kept in with other breeds, so do take that into consideration if you get some. So far as more layer breeds go, for egg numbers alone, the Red Sex Links (Golden Comet, Red Stars, ISA Browns etc) for brown eggs and White Leghorns for white eggs are probably the most popular layers around. If you want breeds that don't lay quite as well but will lay for a longer time, Orpingtons are one of the most popular lots of people really like them and they are great pets though broody, Australorps, Plymouth Rocks, Sussex, Delaware and Wyandottes are some other popular breeds that are usually pretty easy to get along with, they all lay different shades of brown eggs. If you like a colorful egg basket the Easter Egger, often sold as Ameraucana by hatcheries, are a fun breed because they usually lay green/blue eggs which kids think are fun, and they tend to be very nice birds, and then there are the Welsummer and Marans for dark brown eggs.
You might also like to check out your state/country thread to see what people in your area have. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread
Your state thread is also the best place to post if you are looking for local birds. You could also check out the BYC Buy-Sell-Trade forum. This time of year a lot of farm stores still have chicks available, so if you have a TSC etc in your area you could check those. Otherwise there are quite a few large mail order hatcheries that will have chicks available, ie McMurray, Ideal and Cackle are a couple.
