High am new to this site. I have had chickens for about 4 years now. I started with red sexlinks and now have Plymouth Barred Rocks, 2 new Hampshire reds, 1 Rhode island red, and one remaining sex link. I have some concerns about my old sex link and saw you answered questions. I am looking forward to being a part of this.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Nice mix of birds you have there. What are your concerns about your old sex link? If you could describe her problems we can point you in the right direction around the forum.

Be sure to ask any questions you may have, everyone here to help and very friendly.

Enjoy BYC :frow

Thanks for the warm welcome. My beautiful sex link, affectionately named "Nosey Nell" by my 7 year old is just not herself.

She is about 4 years old, which is not old for a hen, but has really slowed down the laying, again completely normal. However on Friday when I went to feed, she was standing with her head pressed up against the wall. When I went to pick her up, she did not flap her wings or anything. I put her on top of the laying boxes where she likes to hang out. She just plopped down. I gave her some food and water but she really was not interested in either.

A little while later I heard a horrible commotion coming from the hen house. Apparently Nell had gotten off the nesting boxes and tried to go out of the hen house into the chicken yard. All of the birds, including the rooster went after her.

I removed her from the group immediately. I decided to put her in an empty small converted guinea pig house. While getting the spot ready, I put Nell on the ground, hoping she would start to scratch and exhibit more of her normal behavior. Not the case. She just stood there.

Just worried about my girl. Thanks for any suggestions anyone might have.

I know she wasn't laying like her younger days but, how many eggs were you getting in a week? Has she suddenly stopped all laying? There is a chance she is egg bound.

Please put that term in the search box for symptoms and treatment advice. You may also want to post in detail at "emergencies, diseases, injuries, cures," thread.

Update on Nell. To answer the question about how many eggs she was laying, I honestly don't know. (Probably makes me a terrible chicken mom.) The thing is Nell and another hen, Butterscotch, are the same age. For about 6 months I have been 1 egg short every day.

Last week I noticed what looked like a first egg, not hard, leather like. It was on top of the nesting boxes, Nell's favorite place to hang out. So I am assuming it was hers.

My father in law watched Nell over the weekend, he used to have 200 laying hens. I really expected her to die. He said she acted reserved until Sunday and then she started acting "normal.". He, to him, she acted like she wanted to set. She has not layed definitely since Friday.
