Hi,
I'm new at this, we just put up a coop and pen yesterday. My daughter had six chicks in a box, no top or bottom, for about 1 1/2 months. They are having to adjust to the freedom. Slight noises or movements send them scurrying back into the coop. My concern is that they may not drink enough. 3 of them came out a few minutes ago but I only saw one drink. I have a tarp over the fence for shade. I put the water under it to keep it cooler.will they go to if thirsty enough? Should I move it closer putting it in the sun?

Thanks, better to have to change and refill than have thirsty chickens I guess.

I moved it. I think they are mocking me. That tall white thing is their feeder.I walked away so that they would come out. All six of them came out and walked straight to the feeder past the water. As though to say, "Well of course we will come to the water if we're going to go to the feeder." Der. "God created us with that much sense. Where did you put yours?"

Everything seems to love chickens but, not in a good way. They are usually born wary because predators are everywhere. So they are skittish but, with some kind socialization and safe, secure surroundings, they generally ease into being contented chickens.

Thanks for all the Welcomes!
They are adjusting now. though it is funny to see them scurry into the coop when one startles. They are starting to stay out more now.
