New Mexico

If anyone wants some Brahmas, I might be able to let some go in a few weeks. Especially if anyone wants really nice looking cockerels. I might have a few pullets that I'm willing to part with, it will depend on my next hatch. I have LF partridge brahmas and am hatching out some bantam dark brahmas. I hope to have my LF dark eggs in a few weeks. Waiting for the freeze to leave Minnesota so that the breeder can ship me some eggs. Here's a picture of my current partridge brahma cockerel, he's almost 8 months old and an 8 month old pullet. I am only interested in keeping the blue pullets, if you breed black to black you only get black and blue to blue gives you splash (white). Black to blue is the only combination that I'm interested in keeping, so all of the others will be available once I know what the colors are going to be. The barnyard rooster is going into the pot as soon as the new coop apartments are finished (unless someone really wants him). Also, I won't let any birds go out until I get my NPIP testing done and results back....I'm not sure how long that is going to take. :idunno
whos doing your NPIP testing. I just took the class to be certified tester. Im excited to have it. Ill be glad to be able to test my own flock here shortly.

Can anyone in Albuquerque give me any input on when to put chicks outside? They're three weeks old right now and living in my laundry room.

I'm a little further south, about 90 miles north of El Paso, but I put my 4 weeks olds out a couple of days ago. If daytime temps are over 70, they should be fine. I bring mine into the garage at night still.

Thanks.

I feel so clueless even though everyone I know with chickens has told me to use common sense and it'll be fine...

I think it depends on how feathered the chicks are and how sheltered their coop is. It seems like four weeks is a good marker, but if they haven't had any exposure to outside before then and are still under a heat lamp, then they need to be weaned off and given a chance to adjust.

Our birds are 7 weeks, and have been out in their coop for two weeks. When can we turn the heat lamp off at night? Thanks!
I guess it depends on where you are and what the night time temps are. I turned mine off when they were 4 weeks old. They go out into the run during the day and are warm in the garage at night, so far things are going well for them. From 1 to 3 weeks old, they had a lamp 24 hours a day, then I went to nights only for the last week (if they are outside, if they are inside the house, no lamp needed for the last week).
