New Mexico

Is anyone planning on going to the Shawnee, OK show. I need a bird brought back if possible. The breeder won't ship.

Hi to all you New Mexicans. I just found this New Mexico tread. I'm new to chickens, this will be our first winter. I have 14 hens and one rooster. I also have nigerian dwarf goats. I adore my goats and didn't realize how much I would fall in love with my chickens. I have Americaunas, Buckeyes, Barred Plymouth Rocks and Buff Orpingtons. I am in the north east. Miami...near Cimarron.

hey everyone, trying to find out if buckeye's would tolerate our climate here. Im in Albuquerque city limits an going to setting up a coop and getting a few birds soon. would love to get buckeyes since i remember these birds from when i was young on my cousins grandparents farm
I have Buckeyes and live in the far north east of the state. This will be our first winter, but everything I have heard is positive and so far my Buckeyes are doing great. Its much colder here than in Albuquerque.

Welcome BOrion! Are you new to NM? We moved down here to the SW part of the State two years ago from the Jemez Mts. I raised RIR in the mts. and found them very hardy but found them a new home when we moved. This spring I got 9 chicks, one each Black Australorp, Welsummer, Black Langshan, Mottled Java, Delaware,Speckled Sussex, Buff Orpington, Spangled Russian Orloff (hens), 1 Silver Lakenvelder rooster, and a pair of Chinese geese. I'm enjoying them so much, especially the geese. I didn't realize the geese would interact with us so much. I think they'd rather be with people than with the other birds.LOL! I'd love to have a goat, but it would mean building another structure and hubby can't right now.. :-(

Hi all! I just arrived to Las Cruces, but chickens are NOT allowed in the city limits. There is a clause for members of FFA being allowed two chickens, but for the rest of us it apparently is not allowed. I am tempted to get a few anyways, but trying to be a law abiding new neighbor! I cannot believe yappy dogs are allowed, but chickens are not. Also, my lot is a third of an acre. Very frustrating!! Thanks for letting me vent!

Not new to NM. Been here close to 55 years! Been in northern NM since 1985. Love it up here. How do you like your Welsummer? I tried hard to get some when I got my first flock in the spring, but they were sold out at all the hatcheries. Still love to have a couple. Goat structure is pretty easy to build. I adore my goats. You probably need several!

My golden campine started laying. I really didn't think they would start until spring at this point. Yeah!

Not my first egg... (ummm in chicken math I have more than 50 but less than 100 birds, shhhh) but these are my youngest 3 hens... an new line. I really didnt expect them to lay until spring. I was disappointed because it wasn't golden. Maybe next time... a girl can dream!

Did you buy a house? Are you in a position to move? There are decent places in Mesilla Park, Dona Ana, Mesquite, La Mesa where it would not be a problem to have chickens or other "farm" animals.

I agree that the yappy dogs around here are horrible. Every yard in Cruces seems to be full of dogs.

I'll be voting with my feet as soon as soon as possible- moving up north where they have more sense.

Good luck!
