Hello all. My wife and I have only had chickens for almost a year, but they're all hatchery stock and we're looking to move up a notch or 3 in our breeding quality. Does anyone know of someone in the SE corner that is a Master/SOP breeder of LF chickens? We're looking for a mentor to help us in breeding quality stock. Somewhere in the Carlsbad, Hobbs, Artesia, Roswell area.

We haven't picked a breed to work with yet, but info from a face to face meeting with someone knowledgeable would be greatly appreciated.

Does anybody know what the rules and regs are for keeping chickens in Corrales? Are they under the same livestock rules as Rio Rancho or ABQ? We're looking to relocate there. Are the rules different for R-1 v. A-1 zoning?

Okay. I will answer my own question: I phoned Cynthia Tidwell recently, one of the head honchos for the Zoning & Planning Commission of Corrales. Her reply was that livestock-keeping rules are VERY lenient in Corrales as they promote all things agricultural -- as in it doesn't matter how much or what you keep -- and they do not care about numbers kept on your property PROVIDED they are kept so they're not an odor and insect (flies) nuisance. I inquired further and, yes, you can keep an unlimited number of chickens AND roosters, just don't let your neighbors lodge complaints about the above nuisances.

I am property shopping in Corrales in June.

You might have some nose held high nabors in Corrales that might complain about roosters. id talk to them all if you get to come here and look in person. Would suck to have the one grumpy butt next to an amazing property.

Are you sure you want to live in the city? If I were buying more property, it certainly wouldn't be in the city... but I'm a hick from the sticks and HATE the city!!! lol I tell people that to get to my house, you go to the middle of nowhere, then go 30 more miles LOL

Thought I might add- if I DID have to live in the city, I think I'd go for a place like Edgewood or Farmington... but even those are too big city for me. Been there, done that.

I'm coming from Las Vegas, NV. Believe me, an acre or two is HUGE in comparison to the postage-stamp lots I've been on. And the thought of having trees again is nirvana. And a place to allow the growth of vegetables and a small chicken coop... Sigh... Bliss.

I'm not really interested in roosters, per se. Too much 'tude. They've always been young things quickly in the stew pot when I've had chickens in the past. BUT at present I've got a oppressive HOA that will not allow birds of any kind (or reptiles) and limits the household animals to three, so want to get out from under that. I had jumped through all the hoops with City and County and all my neighbors were all for a small coop and signed off on it, but -- yeah, one grumpy butt on the Board with a personal vendetta agenda -- the project got nixed.

For work we need to be close to ABQ. We've been up, down and sideways in the state and really like Corrales. It has a good community feel to it. And the convenience factor has a big appeal. When I was in CA I lived way back in the Gold Country foothill sticks and woe be to the one who forgot an item at the store some 20 minutes away.....

There is a small, overpriced grocery store 30 miles away from my town, but we get most of our groceries in Albuquerque or Farmington (which "town" just depends on which way we happen to be going, since we are right in the middle). It's 2 hours one way to go to "town", so when we do go, we pack all of our shopping, vet/farrier/doctor appointments, etc into the same day, and we go approx twice a month to get feed unless something happens. Soon we will hopefully be 90% self sufficient as far as food goes, so that will cut down even more on the trips to town. I do not appreciate being able to see/hear any neighbors, and highly value being able to grow, raise, and do what I want, so ranch life is the only life for me
