New Mexico

Hey all. Glad to be back online. I had a question. My girls combs are bright red and one has started " squatting" every time I get near her. Even though its nearing winter can I expect any eggs soon? They were all born around the middle of april.

Cheeperchick-It sounds like it is quite difficult to find a vet for chickens. My daughter is a vet in Los Alamos and she said she'd be willing to talk to you via email. If you're interested go to her web site 'Oso Mobile' and you can email her from there. Good luck!

Ohhh thank you. I'll give it a try. I've been seeing some weird things in the flock & I don't want to jump to conclusions and give unnecessary treatment.

As they start to mature they start doing that squatting thing. Its there natural instint for breeding. When the dominant rooster comes around the hens who readily accept the mating will squat down for the rooster to jump on. They would rather go with it than be forced. As soon as the comb starts turning red you should be within a month give or take of getting eggs. All breeds are diffrent though. Allot of mine started to lay in the middle of winter last year.

Thanks steen!! I knew you were a wealth of chicken related information. Haha
well i probably know about 5% of the chicken knowledge that is out there. Im getting a good grasp on the basics. Also i know not to act like my chickens poop doesnt stink. some people out there get a false inflated sense of self worth when they think they are chicken greatness.

I hope she can help you!

Where are you located? We moved to San Lorenzo 3 years ago from the Jemz Mtns (close to Los Alamos).
I didn't try to move my RIRs, but got 9 chicks in March last year. I have 7 left. :-( I would like to get some eggs to put under my Australorp who was broody earlier this year...

I'm south of Las Cruces in the Anthony area. Born & raised. It's my first time raising chickens from babies. I have a flock of 12 which includes a roo and a hen that came with the house we live in now...haha.
