New Mexico

Alas, at four weeks she has a pink comb. I do believe Astrid is an oyster. Looks like I am going to have to explore the whole processing thing sooner rather than later. Hope both the marans chicks are pullets. Anybody wanting a barnyard mix black roo, feel free to contact me.

Ha! Yep, it's a computer typo. Update on the new rooster: trying to let the two Roos establish their pecking order, but yesterday the new one lost a spur. Not just the horned part, but the whole thing. Broke off right at the leg. Bled like crazy. Have them separated again.

I had roosters in town , the neighbors never complained. Maybe your neighbors wont care. I have 22 roosters now. I need to find homes for 6 to 7 of them

Ive had good luck and bad luck introducing roosters. I hope your new boy heals up fast.

22! I do plan to try to have a roo, but a CCL one, not my accidental oyster. Honestly, if the neighbors haven't freaked out about the dogs, who spend the days when I am at work having barking contests with the neighbor dogs, then a roo will probably seem like a peaceful break. Chicken math is dangerous. I am telling my self 7 adult chickens, max.

Hey All,

I am new to the BYC and I am looking forward to getting my first chicks this spring! I live in southeast Albuquerque and I was hoping I could get some insight into raising chickens in New Mexico. Specifically, does anyone know if the deep litter method will work in our dry climate? I'm guessing it won't actually do any composting until I get it into my compost bin, but can I use the method anyway or is it best to clean the coop out more regularly? The coop is pretty close to our neighbors yard so I need to keep smells to a minimum.

Also, does anybody have any recommendations on where to get chicks?

TIA!
