New Mexico

We should meet for coffee or tea somewhere and swap stories

Hey y'all I'm actually not from NM but I'm sure as heck not
close to the rest of Texas by any means here in El Paso! So I was debating about ordering all of my chicks online for this flock because we haven't had the greatest time with the local feed stores. Wasn't the worst time, but this next flock is gonna be all mine :yesss: and I want all of them to lay blue eggs! So far the best deal I've found is Cackle hatchery has a 10 pullet special that will ship free for $66. So if anyone has heard of a better deal than that phrase let me know! Also, I don't really intend on breeding because we'll still be in the city limits, but I really don't like the inconsistencies that some hatcheries have with their EE's being so mixed that a good portion of the chicks you'll get don't lay blue. So does anyone have or plan to have any Easter Egged chicks that do lay blue that you'd like to sell? I don't mind driving if I can get a small flock of peeps from you as long as it's not Albuquerque... thanks for your time :jumpy

Hi everyone! I'm sitting up at 7200 feet here in Santa Fe! Any suggestions for good breeds for this area?

Almost anything. Just need to decide what you are trying to do, eggs, meat, pretty, big, small, pet, show birds, raise chicks, free range or cooped up....all of those things are the questions that you need to ask yourself. I haven't notice an effect from the altitude, and we don't really extremes in weather so almost any breed will be fine. I raise Brahmas, but you'll find all different breeds out here.

I think I'm about the only one in Southern NM, almost everyone else is Albuquerque or more north. I only raise Brahmas, sorry, no colored eggs. I'd try the buy~sell~trade section of the forum and see what you can find there. It is almost too late to mail chicks, so I would hurry unless you are willing to hatch some eggs.

Heading to NM tomorrow to check out Placitas, Corrales and the East Mountains area. Hope we fall in love with somewhere that fits the budget and a string of other criteria! LOL, Including a place for the chickens :)

I haven't been to that part of the state yet. Lived here only two years. Traveled the western and central parts and in the NE section but nothing really south of Albuquerque. I hope you like it and so do the peeps! ;-)

Thanks! Would absolutely love to live in Santa Fe but can't find a place I like in our price range. Looked at 3 or 4 houses over Memorial day, but each had something that bugged me. (Freeway noise, tiny lot, or needed a major remodel.) The one I really want is about 100K over our budget!

Oh well, New Mexico has a lot of great places to choose from - Narrowing down our options is the purpose of this trip. I have 3 Cream Legbars that lay blue eggs and two EE/OE that lay nice green eggs. I've promised them more space. :) When I got my chickens I figured I could buy white or brown eggs at the store, and am so glad I have blue and green egg layers. Everyone I give them to just loves them.

Good luck with setting up your new coop and starting your new flock!

FridayYet, there's the Turquoise Trail development at the south end of town (Santa Fe) that have acreage parcels and yet easy access to I-25. Hope you find what you are looking for. It's an easy state to live in.

Well, my new community of New Mexican chicken lovers, I've spent all afternoon searching online and am getting REALLY excited!!! I decided to look for good layers that tolerate the heat. Here's what I've come up with so far:

Australorps Barred Rocks

Golden Buffs

And for a some cool digs......

Chick Starter Set up The Clubhouse

I'm beyond excited!!!
