New Mexico

I just wanted to let you know that MelodyVon Farms, a breeder in Moriarty, is downsizing her chickens. She is getting rid of a lot of her breeding stock. Check her out on Facebook!

Hello!

I just joined BYC and thought Inshould introduce myself to the NM thread. This is my third year raising chickens. Is there a classifieds just for New Mexico?

Just found this thread I'm so excited! I live in Los Lunas we're planning on getting chickens in the spring so we're doing all of our footwork now. I'm still deciding on what kind of breed of chicken to get I want to make sure it's okay as far as meat and eggs go. I'm looking at the Plymouth rocks right now but any suggestions from locals that have had a lot of luck with another one would be definitely welcome. I would like to see myself with a Broody hen for some good breeding rather than buying pull its over and over again eventually so I want to make sure the parade will have that capabilities when I'm ready for it in a year or so. Has anybody had any luck actually breeding their own chickens and if so kind of tips do you have for the desert climate. I saw about doing the chick rooting Outdoors as well as indoors but living here in the desert temperature is definitely a concern because of the heat in the day in the cool of the night. I want to make sure my chickens are safe I certainly don't plan on free-ranging them because of the Predators living out here but I do plan on making a huge Run for the chickens and doing a dual Coupe run combo for the readers and then the plane layers with one rooster.

I'm at 6400' so cold winters and hot summer. I got Gold & Silver Wyandottes and so far, so good. They are excellent layers. They are just now a year old and I've got my 2nd broody setting. 1st broody hatched 4 chicks last month. I got them from McMurray last June. I have to say I'm really not happy with the rooster behavior & the hens having to wear saddles. Hoping their feathers grow back after molt. I'm giving him a while as the general advise is that they grow up a bit after a year or so, but I can sure understand how much easier life would be for EVERYone if there were only hens. He has 8 hens and I know 10 - 12 is better, so hoping for at least 50% pullets out of the chick hatches to improve the ratio. I'm in the Natl forest and we free range, locking them up at night. I've seen one hawk attack (it missed) and lost one hen due to a neighbor dog. I thought it was coyote, but found out later it wasn't. Dogs are your biggest threat. Best of luck.

I'm at about 7000'... Would that affect chickens much more than 6400'? I haven't bought any chickens yet...

I started looking into the Wyandottes, they're absolutely gorgeous I think I'm going to switch to them from the Plymouth rocks I was originally thinking. I am amazed at just how sweet they and how gorgeous they look. Thank you so much for your reply
