For the first time in got into raising chickens this year. I started with 2 RIRs in a small coop. They were pullets when I got them and started laying about an egg a day each back in beginning of September. I decided I wanted more hens, so I attended a poultry show and I picked up 10 hens and 1 rooster of various breeds. A got a large amish coop delivered to my yard which I was told holds 20 birds. There was minor squabbling for 3-4 days but that worked itself out.

So since moving all the birds into the big coop together, no one is laying. I did contend with a respiratory sickness three weeks ago where 3 hens took I'll. I treated the whole flock with antibiotics and everyone is now fine. The flock has been together in the coop for a month now and no one is laying any eggs. At least 6-7 of the birds are of laying age. How can I make these birds lay or am I doing something wrong? Btw, they all free range during the day, and go back into the coop at night. Have checked the yard for eggs and there aren't any.

If you live in the northern hemisphere, the days are getting shorter. This triggers a halt in egg production in most egg layers.

You can get them laying again by adding supplemental light. Many of us have a low wattage light plugged into a timer to come on two hours before sunrise. This lengthens the day and the hens should start laying again in a few weeks. You will need to add an hour to the timer as the days get shortest in December.

I will give this a try I live in upstate NY. Hopefully the hardware store has the timer! Thanks for the reply
