Thank you all for the welcome. Here is a pic of my for babies... hopefully all girls! I appreciate all your help. If any of you fellow Arizonians have any advise for building a coop condusive to the weather here... do tell! i am in Mesa.

Cute chicks! I'm on the other side of Phx and we built our coop to keep the chickens safe from predators and also to give them protection from the wind & rain. After researching, I found that chickens don't really need protection from the cold in this area - it just doesn't get that cold here.
Here's a link with photos of our coop:
The photos were taken a month ago when the coop was just built. I have since discovered we do not need the heat lamp - they prefer sleeping in the dark and if I turn the light on, they think it's daytime and stay up. They are now 3 months old and have been sleeping outside in this coop with no lheat lamp for a month now and seem very comfortable. Even during our freeze warnings, they didn't even huddle together like they were cold - their feathers are great insulators.
The next boxes have not been added yet and we will be raising the roost very soon (now that they are bigger). We put a board across the bottom of the coop to keep in the shavings since we are using the deep litter method.
It has to be exciting to finally move on something you've been thinking about doing for four years now. Can you believe you finally have chickens?
I hope you'll learn a lot here. This is a very supportive and welcoming community, and as you can tell from what others have said, we have a lot of fun!
