We recently bought 12 Light Brahma pullets. As a first time chicken mother, I didn't know what exactly to expect despite the research beforehand. This site was one of the first places I went to for information and what a lot of good advice you all have too.
It took me about 3 weeks to decide to join. Just reading posts was not enough in case I had my own questions. So here I am.
Why did my family decide to get chickens? Well it was actually my husbands idea. As Mr Worse-Case-Scenario, he thought that having our own eggs would be advantageous due to the constraints almost the whole world is enduring due to Covid-19. He says it's always good to be prepared in the unlikelyhood of the worst happening. It wasn't due to panic just practicality in his eyes.
I did remind him that if we did get pullets, we wouldn't get any eggs for 6 months maybe more. He realized that but figured it would be a good idea anyway. The pandemic wasn't the only reason to get them. It would teach our boys responsibility and give us the enjoyment of having more members of the family to interact with.
I didn't want to give him the ok without any information. I wanted to do my own research too. I've worked with animals almost my whole life and know first hand what happens to them when people buy them on a whim. I also never assume I'm knowledgeable in something I have no experience with and I always consider the animal's welfare first.
A friend who owns chickens recommended we get Brahmas since they have friendly personalities so they're great for a beginner. They may not be the best egg-layers but it's not like we need that many eggs a week either.
Anyway, my chicks are about 3 weeks old so too young to know if they are actually all pullets or if a cockerel is hiding somewhere among them. I wouldn't mind one. Two or more would obviously be a problem for the girls. But I love them all and can't imagine not having them now. I could spend literally hours with them if I was able, watching as they develope their own little personalities.
So if you actually read my detailed introduction, thanks. If not, well I certainly can understand that. I have a tendency to get carried away.
