New Muscovy Adoptee

Hmm I am still leaning toward male too. Very sweet and friendly. He spent his first few months without any feathered friends so has been pretty independent from the flock thus far. I hope he knows he is duck. He actually seems more interested in talking to the geese so maybe once they stop hovering over their kids they will let him hang out too :)

Oh she/he is fully feathered for sure. Works on them constantly! They are very pretty I can't wait to see if the color changes any.

Makes me think of my Henry he is a little over 4 months old stands more erect than his sisters. what was throwing me off on your duck was the legs didn't look very thick from front view, side view yes.

Hi Miss Lydia, very nice pic of your muscovies. Colour is similar to some of mine here.

Also the pics show the difference in the caruncles at this age. Which is something that throws me, as I would expect a drake that has his flights to also have more developed caruncles than Ferq. Mine become someone´s dinner before they fully get their flights, so they´re a good size by then, and obviously drakes. So the flight feathers throw me. Could he/she be a bit older than 3 months? It does have quite a male head and neck.
So it´s down to size..so I looked again at the pics, and if that´s a fully-sized mallard, then the muscovy has to be a drake. Just because of size. What´s the prize for who guesses right?

Trying to sort this online is like attempting a needle in a haystack, young Muscovies are mainly about sizing and pics skew perspective, unless a common denominator is used.

The bird is how old? that's the first thing to tackle, i have some June guys here and by now they are HUGE and have quite a bit of fleshing started(not saying fleshing is reliable, i have birds who vary with this, sex becomes irrelevant) , they do hiss..

Here.. ignore the duck, in the pen lol the guy you see staring at her is a June hatch, you can see how big his feet are, the red flesh appearing and so forth.

I'll see if i can find a shot of his sister... sorry not the best shot but gives you an idea, i'll see if i can get a better shot of her today, she's quite compact, flies real well and definitely honks and chirps.

I believe he is a summer hatch so a few months old ? Fully feathered out but still has that sweet duckling chirp. I went out and weighed him and he weighs 7-8lbs . Will he continue to pack on weight or should he weigh more by now? I am loving all the pics of your all scovies! So pretty!

If a drake which looks like that is the thinking now he may top out at 15lbs. by adult. especially if he already weighs in a 7-8lbs. girls usually top out around 5-7lbs.
