Hello!
So excited to be a new member. I am the very elated new owner of ten little chicks! five are just under a week old, two Mottled Javas and three Easter/Olive Eggers. The other five are a bit of a mystery...They were suppose to be one of the following breeds:
Black Orpington
Jersey giants
Austrolorps
Rode red island

But I have some serious doubts... No matter, chickens are chickens and eggs are eggs, but if anyone out there has any idea of what breed they might actually be I would really appreciate it! The only thing that might not show in the photos is that two of the black chicks have feathers on the sides of their bare legs.

Thanks!!

You do sound EGG-cited!!

The dark ones are either Black Australorps or the Jersey Giants. The way to tell the difference is the bottom side of the feet on a Jersey Giant is their feet are yellow. Where as the Black Australorps feet bottoms are white. I am not 100% sure if this applies to babies, but it DOES apply to grown birds. As for the others, I am clueless. LOL

You might want to post these pics in our What Breed section here on BYC where the members are great at IDing babies....

Thanks,
I will post in that section also! I have been wanting chickens for a very long time so I am so happy to finally have some:)

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X2 post on the What Breed Or Gender Is This forum The feather legged ones may be some of your olive eggers, a lot of times Marans are used for that cross... with the yellow/white chicks, could you have wound up with White Jersey Giants, they usually come in White, Black or Blue.

I have babies that are supposed to be Australorps, they look just like your black ones. They had the white down their breast and the little white on their face. They've lost most all of the white now. So cute! I'd lay my money on Australorp, but like I said they're "supposed" to be! I've already found that 2 I thought were buff orpingtons were actually cornish rocks!!! I may have to go with mail order from now on instead of Tractor Supply! :(

You can usually get a good idea around 10 to 12 weeks old, sometimes earlier depending on the breed. By then, the potential roos will have reddening combs and wattles, thick legs and possibly even be practicing the crow!
