New New New...In Maryland

Greetings from Kansas, carrieahoff, and

! Pleased you joined us! Love the 'bird and the bees' reference! I agree with your idea of the mixed flock - I have 11 different breeds - all with different mannerisms, and character - not to mention different colored eggs. I'm thinking of starting some bees myself - but like you with chickens - I am so nervous! Anyway, good luck to you on your chicken adventure!

We actually live in Carroll County... i thought of calling Bowman's to see if they are "sexed" or not! we only want hens.... no roosters for us yet:) Where are you in Maryland?
Welcome to BYC...I'm also in Maryland!  Do you live anywhere near Carroll County?  Bowman's in Westminster starts getting their chicks in next week!  (Can't wait!!!!)

Hello and welcome to BYC

Glad you joined us!

Still researching what kind of chicks we want. I would like a variety of hens...and probably around 4-6 to start.  We are interested in laying hens/pets!  We are always open to suggestions and the best place to get the chicks!

I have to say I have always liked my Plymouth barred rocks the best, they seem to have the best personalities to me but I haven't experimented with to many breeds! As for egg production of a jumbo red egg my red sexlinks have done the best. I wouldn't suggest any leghorns though mine are way to nervous and flighty! Lol but the Easter eggers are fun my nieces and nephews always fight over who gets to eat the blue or green eggs! Best of luck glad you could join us

Well great, you're in Westminster! I'm in Eldersburg.

Bowman's says their chicks are sexed, but last year (which was also my first go-round with chickens) we bought five (their minimum) and ended up with one roo. If I've learned one thing here on BYC, it's that sexing chickens is NOT an exact science! Here's a suggestion for you...stop by Bowmans...they have a printout you can take with you that tells what kinds of chicks they are getting and when they will be in.
