I just got my order this morning from Mt Healthy. It got here from OH in just ONE day. I ordered all EE's:15 pullets and one roo. They added 2 extra. From some of the posts I saw on here, I was afraid some might not have made it. All made it here (knock on wood) so far! They all just about hopped out of the box. I have to say their packing was awesome!

Here's the first question..I called and asked them what the extras were. They said they packed the same breed. HOwever, I wonder if they are extra roos or littlle pullets? How would I tell?

Also, most look like little chipmunks. But a few have a darker look, and there is one that is yellow.

Last, I have the brooder light on. Right under it , the temp is 95. However, they are not staying there. They are venturing out where it is 85 or so. Is that ok?

Here's a picture of what I saw when I opened the box!

Congratulations of your new babies.
It is a little early to tell yet which are pullets. Sometimes you can tell by the feathering, or comb color and size. EE's come in all colors. When I got mine, they sent 4 chipmunk colored pullets, and one with a bit of white, who ended up being a beautiful rooster. I knew he was different after about 3 weeks. he was bigger and had attitude already.
Enjoy your chickies!
Oh, they will move to a cooler spot if too warm. Raise the lamp a bit each week to lower the temp. I kept mine on an L bracket and that way it could be raised/lowered according to that days temps. I broodered inside so the room stayed consistent.

I'd say make sure they can't get TOO far away from the heat lamp but apart from that don't worry about it. If they're cold they'll bunch up under the light, if they're hot they'll move away from it. I don't know anything about roos or pullets but they all look lovely!

Thanks CkMom and Gypsy07.

I love all the colors too. A couple are almost solid brown, several with chipmunk coats, and one almost solid yellow. The yellow one is the smallest, and has the most attitude right now. I hope I don't fall in love with them all. The brooder I had built will only hold about 7. Thought if I could figure out now which are boys and girls, I would go ahead now and find the ones homes I was not going to keep.

EE's are impossible to tell at this stage. Best chance would be to look at their feet. If you have a few pair of thick clunkers, those are probably your boys

*shrugs* It's a shame they're not marked, you probably won't have any idea at all of who's who until at least 3-4 weeks.

Cute chicks. Maybe you'll be able to tell in a few weeks whether your extras are little roos or little hens.
I live near Anniston. Where are you located in AL?

I hope so. I might just go ahead and find homes for 5-6 now. We are in Scant city, near Guntersville

Now, as of yesterday, they are 2 weeks old. I noticed 3 of them have hardly any tail feathers, and very little feathering compared to the others. The rest have a LOT of feathering. The 3 also have large feet and thicker legs compared to the others. I am guessing these are the 2 extras (and they are boys?) and the one boy I ordered. So ..maybe..3 boys and the rest are pullets? What do ya'll think?

OH what a buncha cuties! EEs are my favorite breed. I have some from the Meyer Hatchery. Not only are they very pretty, they are my friendliest chickens!

You will just love them. They're also great layers! Mine lay a nice sea-foam green egg every day. And sounds like your heat lamp is set perfectly. They'll go in and out to warm up and cool down.

If the little chicks are too hot, you will see them kind of pant with their little beaks open. If they're too cold, the cheep-cheep alot and cluster underneath the light.

Just use your motherly instincts! (Or fatherly.....) LOL

I have better luck with early sexing by looking at the thickness of their legs and ankles. I can see definite differences even on day 1.
