Hello,

I am just joining this group from west of Edmonton, Alberta.

We have a beautiful coop ready to house about 10 chickens but I am having such a hard time finding any pullets around here!! I'm looking for RIRs or Barred Rocks but am open to others that are dual purpose and friendly as I am a first time owner! Or trying to be... :(

I would love to hear everyone's best tips and tricks for a newbie!

TIA

Welcome to BYC! If you don't mind hybrids, I would suggest Black Sex Links (Black Stars), which are produced by crossing RIR roosters with Barred Rock hens. They are friendly, readily available, egg laying machines, outlaying either parent breed and the chicks can be sexed by color at hatching (males are whitish, females are reddish). If you want to stick with standard breeds, I would suggest Black Australorps. They are very hardy (both cold and heat), calm and gentle, and the best brown egg layers of the standard breeds. Whatever you end up getting, good luck with your flock.

Thank you! Are they a fair size as well? We are looking for a dual purpose breed...

Also, at this point I'm almost willing to try any breed... No one in my area seems to have availability. It is very frustrating.. :(

Both Black Sex Links and Black Australorps are dual purpose birds that essentially weigh the same as RIRs.
