I rented a cottage in Northern California that came with a coop and a run, and i’ve always wanted chickens, so… i have 5. 3- 8 month olds (leghorn, ameracauna, copper maran), and 2 - 3 month old (olive and easter egger).

i’m surprised at how much i love these girls.. they reduce my stress level by watching them peck around, dust bathe, etc. they increase my stress level, i’m worried about “doing it right” and predators, and parasites..

i enjoy gardening, sewing, playing guitar. i’m so proud of my husky, who completely tolerates the chickens. wouldn’t say he likes them, he ignores them. i work full time as a social worker.

i’ve had several folks recommend BYC to me.

Welcome! It’s super easy to become obsessed with our chickens, (ask me how I know) but it is also super easy to worry, especially when browsing the emergencies/illness/injuries forums. Don’t let it scare you, they’re very resilient for the most part. And you more than likely won’t encounter most of what you read about.

Having a chicken first aid kit made me feel better, but in the past 3 years of chicken keeping I haven’t used most of it. Still being prepared helps me cope with the stresses of being a chicken parent.

You being aware of what could happen and the injuries/illnesses out there and how to prevent them and prepare for them makes you a great owner. And we’re here to help with whatever you need!

Feel free to share some pictures of your new feathered friends and good luck! They’re the best therapy!
