Hi Jackie & Justin, welcome to BYC! I'm in Texas, where it is hot and humid. My chickens love scratching in mud, when it is really hot. I throw ice cubes in shady, low spots and let them melt. I also keep pans of ice out. That can keep them occupied and cooler for a while.

I live near Ocala Florida. Everyone is different as well as their situations. I currently have around 400 birds and several coops so what works for me probably wouldn't work for others. There is a lot of good info here, Learning Center. Good luck and have fun...

1. Best ways to keep them cool?

Shade, lots of shade.
Wet dirt.
Tubs of cool water for them to stand in.

2. What to do about a pre-fab coop we bought that is A TOTAL POS!!!!! We made some modifications to make it functional (more ventilation/added a HUGE run/etc). My hubby is VERY HANDY and loves his girls so he is always looking for ways to improve it. They love the nesting boxes, and use them well.

3. Should we expand the small coop or just create a roosting spot seperate from the (pre-fab coop with the nesting boxes?!?)
