It's just not quite square, and may be a wood waste.

Build a 24"x48" rectangle for the floor. That's one and one half 8' boards. Then do the same for the top, and you have used a grand total of 3, 8 foot boards. You now have a top and bottom for your pen. Run 1/2 hwc on the bottom of your pen, then decide how tall you want it to be, and choose boards and cut them accordingly....10-12+ inches.....if you are keeping score...that's a total of 4, 8 foot boards needed to create a 24"x48"x10"+ pen.
The upside to these dimensions is....you don't need to long cut 24"x X' 1/2' hardware cloth.
