Delivered two litters this weekend have another on the way. My York litter had 9 and the spot 8. When we are raising for show pigs we want 7-10 so I am very happy. Any more is too much competition for milk and birth weight is always better when there is room in mama. Little worried that I bred too good on the one due now. She is pretty full. Had a litter of 19 two years ago----NIGHTMARE!!! I had foster babies all over my barn. Thank goodness I had mama's with spare bottles!
That cough you are asking about. Never heard of worms causing a cough. Not sure! By looking at your pictures is she in a barn that is dusty? Your babies are about the size that should be zipping around and playing and if they are throwing up dust she can get it in her lungs(so can they). We call it dust pnuemonia. You can give her LA 200(feed store) if it is not bad, I would start there. If it is really a deep hoarse sounding cough you might want to use Draxin(Vet), Nuflor(Vet), Lincomix 300(feed store, TSC), I never use Pennicillin for a cough. What I would use is a shot of Nuflor, probably 8cc's. She can have any of those with the babies nursing. If I'm seeing it right, judging from the size her babies should be and her size in the pic, I'm guessing she weighs 225-250 give or take a few. Nuflor is 1cc per 30Lbs. Watch her close since she just delivered she could prolapse from the coughing, definately stay on it. If it is dusty I would sprinkle it down just a bit to calm it down. We have to do that to our arena. Watch her breathing is she laboring(stomach sinking it to draw a breath), appearing to have waterey eyes, can hear her breathe--They do sometimes get allergies too, you can give her 24 hr chewable Alavert(peoples over the counter). 1 pill a day. Just put in yogurt or on an oreo cookie or something small you know she will eat. Don't let the babies get it.
She probably does need wormed by the way she looks but I wouldn't do it until the babies are off. It sometimes causes scours and you don't want that. I wean at 21-28 days, depending on when you wean, you can do it then. I don't think I would leave all your babies on over that. She won't be able to eat enough to maintain her weight. They look like you bred to a York or a York based cross by their color so they will grow fast. At that time I would recomment Ivomec, it cuts dirt worms very good. If you don't want to give a shot you can soak about 3cc of Ivomec on Vanilla wafers or ritz crackers see what she likes first then feed it to her. That is our pigs treats. There are some pelleted feed wormers, we don't usually use them, I like the Ivomec.
The babies would be better with a piglet ivomec shot or you can give about .3/10 of a cc of Regular Ivomec in the mouth for a 20lb baby. If you give shots, it is subcutaneous, you have to pinch the skin and go under it, not in the muscle. You will need to worm again around 3-4 moths. You can give Safeguard or Atguard then. I give those on a cracker, I put the atguard in peanut butter on a cracker. They love it!
