Last night (probably more like early this morning) we got a new hatch. When mama hen left the nest with her babies he was left behind. At first I thought he was just tired from hatching, but there this round red thing on his butt. Not sure what it is or how to explain it better, but here's a picture. What is this and what can be done to help? Sorry about the low quality pictures. If need be I can try getting more, but I'm not sure if they'll turn out any better.

It's a bit of unabsorbed yolk sack. If it were mine I'd set up a brooder and keep that chick in it until the yolk is gone. If it's with the others they may peck it to death since its red. You can put it back in with mama as soon as it's fully absorbed.

Well, sadly he didn't make it through the night. I isolated him as you suggested, but he never did gain any strength. He remained lethargic and weak. Thankfully everyone else seems to be doing fine and mamma hen's happily taking care of them.

Aw, I'm sorry. :hugs Sometimes those ones just get too weak. Sounds like you did everything you could. I'm glad everyone else is doing well.
