New puppy dying of Parvo... (BOWEL MOVEMENT PICTURES WARNING)

Im just saying that because people keep repeating the shelter is going to have an outbreak, when thats not the case nescassarily. It would be a good thing to let them know they dropped the ball on their vaccine protocal and possibly caused it in that way. It wasnt pointed at you, or insinuating you are a bad pet owner, puzzled by your response. I wasnt trying to be a jerk, just trying to educate people on how this disease works. Many people read these, not just the OP.

OlliOlliOlli how is you pit bull?

I am following this thread hoping your puppy and other dogs will be OK.

How is everyone today?

the vaccs that are at a store other then a vet are the same as the vets use..they only tell you that so you buy from them..may be a different brand, but if the vets are buying that brand its the same thing..I have heard of many many HS dogs having parvo..they have no idea what they bring in on a daily bases, they do not quarantene, they put new dogs in with ones that have been there..and I really wonder if they get vaccinated as really half the staff dont know crap. Many dogs are up for adoption the day after they arrive, sense parvo takes 10-14 days to show symptoms, many of these dogs are in new homes before you know they are sick..HS are a good thing, but the care practices some of them have are a little suspect.

Our vet doesn't charge us for the vaccines, so what would the ulterior motive be?

I find it hard to believe he doesnt charge for vaccines..if they dont then its money out of their own pocket..not calling you a lier, but he is getting his money from them somewhere along the line, perhaps overchargeing in other areas..just saying, giving away vaccs doesnt make any sense..

Surprising as it may seem, there are good vets and they do not all insist on overcharging or over-treating. He is our personal vet and, has been used by the ranch on which we live for 20 years or so. I'd be more inclined to argue that he undercharges, but we keep him busy and in the grand scheme of things 5 dog vaccines a year is not a big deal to him. He truly is a vet that does his job for the love of animals, almost to his own detriment. He has no other staff and works from his home (he is primarily a large animal vet). Consequently it's not unusual for him to forget entirely to bill customers! We've had to actually pester him to let him know what we owe him.

There was an episode a few years back when the old ranch manager received a bill from him for $1200. He was completely shocked, until he realised it was the total for the previous 18 months!

Giving away vaccines does make sense if you are serious about keeping the local animal population healthy, and would rather not have to spend time treating these diseases and possibly contaminating your own facilities. Not to mention it's good business sense for keeping long term clients!

I apologize that I got upset laser, it's been stressful on me because in the grand scheme of things, I'm the loser in this, as is the doggie.

Puppy is home -- the slap really is the vet bill -- they charged me $900 for her to sit in a kennel with IV's for 4 days. I got REALLY mad. She reeks of urine and vomit, to boot. She was desperate for attention and clung to my lap the entire way home. I am not going back to that vet again...I've given them nearly $7000 in the last 18 months and recommended them to so many people. I am beginning to feel like "Miss Cha-Ching" to them, like they see a gaping wallet oozing with cash everytime I walk in.

Pittypit is fine, she's acting like nothing is wrong. I think she was depressed without her friend.

The vet office said that my terrier wouldn't eat or drink...I got her home and she is glomming water. They also want me to fast her for 6 days more...I am NOT going to do that, she will starve to death!!!!

Some vet offices aren't very animal friendly and sometimes the dogs won't eat or drink when they are in there. I am glad that all your dogs are doing much better!!

Im totally shocked they want her to fast. Where I work they go home as SOON a they eat and hold the food down and have some solid form to the stool. Your probably very right to feed her, can you imagine. Shes better off at home for sure.
