New puppy vs older dog, HELP!

Why, oh why, do we get puppies? Seems like a good idea at the time, and, as raising children, and childbirth, we block out and 'forget' all the fun times involved.

i agree ...there are times when they get along, being sleepy, mealtime isn't one of them. but with some great advice from here i think they will be ok. it's only been 1 month, so i have hope.

My "puppy" is now 5 years old and the old dog is 12. and they still have their squabbles - mostly when the pup runs over the old dog or gets in old dogs way when he wants to bark at the cats. Pup is about 110 pounds, old dog is 55 pounds. Pup is starting to challenge the old dog for "boss" rights. Old dog really doesn't care at this point and lets pup be alpha. We are still boss though.
We let them set their own boundaries ever since we brought pup into the house. This was the third time we brought a new pup into the house, and it has always worked itself out.

Generally it's best to get a new dog of the opposite sex to the resident dog. things tend to be smoother that way.
Twice I've had issues here with dogs of the same sex, who couldn't decide 'who's on first' and fought. Both times one of those individuals (the newby) had to be rehomed, for peace and safety. Once was two neutered males, once two females; both times it was actually a struggle for second and third place in the pack!

I'm dealing with the same exact thing right now with my 11 yr old Boxer and 5 month old Rottweiler. There's only one piece of advice I have that hasn't been mentioned yet here. "A tired puppy is a happy puppy". Walk that pup alot(which for my Rottweiler, she'd have to walk 10 miles before she would be tired it seems lol). Engage him in games. My pup gets in the least trouble when she's had a nice long walk. She's more tired out and willing to nap than getting bored and thinking of trouble to get into(such as annoying an old dog).

This was noise and teeth, no injuries. Scared me more than pup. I've never seen that from the older one. I will let them figure it and supervise for injuries. This is going to he a long, frustrating fall, lol
I will say for you I’ve had this problem with my herding dogs some of them didn’t get along together what I would do is I would walk the together or I would get them to lay next to each other while we slept so that they got used to each other company also I had a really big crate that I would lock which dogs didn’t get along and then the would be in the and they would get treats if they were good and then got to come out afterwards sorry if this sounds mean but it worked for me :) .

Thank you
They have gotten better. The younger one is still rather aggressive at times and is known to nip at his brother. I know they have grown fond of each other because of the way they act when one is hurt or doesn't feel well. They also snuggle together now. Playing is still a challenge with an older dog bit we are getting there.
