Sorry for the run on sentence but wanted to add this

I’m not entirely sure about it myself, I mean, I love the fact they’re finally adding animal protein to a feed, but it does kind of seem a bit gimmicky with the whole tag line/appeal of trying to mimic or copy a free range diet or whatever and cute cover photos and whatnot which I’m not particularly in love with BUT I’m super excited about the fact that they’re adding animal protein to a feed finally and for such a large, name brand, trusted company to do it is huge so if it’s a little bit “gimmicky” at first, that’s perfectly fine by me! I’m just glad they’re brave enough to try it and maybe this will lead to other companies trying it!! although I do wish it was 50 pounds like their other feeds instead of 40 pounds. That sort of stinks but at least they made it! And between this and the duck pellets, they are really heading in the right direction lately.

will not by the numbers, I have mixed flock including a rooster and have them on flock raiser with oyster shell or crushed egg shell on the side for them

I agree but I’m glad they’re at least taking the first step. Maybe it will lead to more companies adding animal protein back in.

Although personally it almost seems like it’d be cheaper or easier to just buy the regular feed, whatever that is, and feed some crickets or mealworms once in a while. But maybe not, idk. I’d be curious to know how much animal/insect protein is actually in the feed. If it’s a decent amount, it may be worth a shot, but if it’s like way down on the ingredients list just so they can say they added it/used as a marketing thing then it may not be. So I guess it depends for me. I would love it if there was a good amount of it in there but I don’t know if there is. Is there a way to find out?

Thanks, but I am on a computer and saw the 'two pages' side-by-side ... still looks like new labeling as all the values listed, but two, are identical.

Animal or vegetable protein, either way, the right amino acids in the right % are in the feeds. I also feed Flock Raiser.
About the grain mites: were you checking the mill date on each bag of feed, and only buying fresh?
I keep the feed in the original bags, in metal garbage cans in the coop. Never in the house! If it's in the original bag, and there's any problem, it's easier to deal with.

Ahh okay, on my phone it’s two separate pages, didn’t think it might be the different on a computer haha

But anyway, that makes sense but I’m pretty sure none of the other feeds have animal protein in them, they’ve prided themselves on the whole “vegetarian feed” thing for a while, so I think that part’s definitely different, but otherwise the formulation is maybe the exact same.

They probably took one of the layer feed formulations and just added insects for some of the protein instead of whatever they used before and kept the rest of it. But then, a lot of their feeds are similar or nearly identical except a few numbers. I’d say most companies are but idk.

It’s all about money for them and offering different variations on the same product (pellets versus crumbles or medicated versus non medicated, organic or not, etc.) will make them money as will coming up with new ideas like this “free range” stuff with bugs and the duck feed they just recently came up with.

But I think it’s at least a step in the right direction but idk.

I just wish it was in a bigger bag. Seems kinda pricey for only 40 pounds.

Also speaking of pounds and money, etc., I think they also just came out with 10 pound bags for some of their feeds. I think previously it was 5, 25, and 50, but companies are always thinking of ways to make more money. But it is a convenient size, I will say that. So maybe people asked for it.

And I will say it does look like they redesigned the packaging on a lot of their feeds, mostly the layer feeds, so maybe this is some sort of marketing or rebranding thing. Who knows.

That’s true, I am sure it is well balanced, but I do like the idea of at least some of the protein coming from more natural sources like bugs. But then again mine do sometimes free range so it’s not really necessary. I also feed a higher protein feed anyway. But it is an interesting concept and I may try it if I can find it.

And those are all good suggestions. I always try to buy as fresh as I can even if that means buying a different kind of feed than I would normally buy. I switch feeds a lot so I usually just look at the date on the tag to find the freshest one and buy that one. Some of them are really old.

I just looked at the TSC website, and here at Williamston, Michigan, the new Layer feed with meal worms added is $17.49 for 40 pounds. I buy Flock Raiser there at $16.99 for 50 pounds.
You pay for having some ground up meal worms in that bag!
My birds have to find their own meal worms, or any other kind of worms...
