Backyard Chickens and particularly this thread (all 81 pages) have inspired me to keep Coturnix. So hopefully not boring everyone I thought I would document how I go on this thread. Over the last week I have thought and designed the Coop, a simple A Frame design ( I am no carpenter). This afternoon I purchased some timber and began building (short days in the south of New Zealand) I soon ran out of light but got three A Frames trusses built from 6 x 1.5 metre 45mm square lengths of timber. Part 2 tomorrow and maybe then I can upload a photo or two.

WELCOME!!!! And I won't be bored by your posting or any of your future updates. Every new member brings something new to the forum. One of our latest members introduced "quail tractors" which is an innovative idea as not many keep their quail using that method.
Have you decided to hatch your quail from eggs, or will you purchase live quail? If you decide to build your own eggs, this link will assisit you.

Yeah, good thing I didn't type "LAY", huh? That should have said "Hatch". My "wayback machine" has a glitch in it and changed what I was thinking to something completely different. I was thinking he may want to build his own incubator too, and here is the link for that.

Welcome to the addiction. Keep us posted with lots of pictures. I love talking to first time keepers. They often discover new things because they don't know when something "shouldn't" work. Most of us experienced keepers tend to be set in our ways and don't often try new things easily.

Thanks for the welcome and to answer James I am getting birds but intend to breed and incubate eggs, so thanks for the link. managed to post first pictures of coup building into my first post. I have done some more today. Using 6 x 1.5m 75mm x 25mm wooden boards I joined the trusses together and fitted some ply on the top which I intend mounting led lights powered by a solar panel. Lots more to do.

Finished one end of the coop other than painting. The sliding doors are raised 50mm from the floor and give me access to the main area of the coop right, centre and left.
Question how adept are they at walking up a ramp? I am pondering on making more floor space by raising the enclosed area.

It looks amazing! And you said you weren't a carpenter! Well you are now.

I look forward to seeing your progress.

If you make the ramp long and not very steep, they will walk up it well. They are very curious birds and should quickly learn where they can take cover. They will especially love it if you keep a solid bottom on the enclosed living quarters.
