5 Days have gone by since I got my Japanese Coturnix quail, A few things I have noticed as a new keeper.
Food:
It took some effort to find their base food for them, the best I found was Reliance Game bird Crumbles (made in New Zealand), which was the only high protein (23%) feed that I could find without antibiotics in it so I will still need to supplement, thus I have started a meal worm farm yesterday.
Greens: Their favorite is definitely clover followed by what over here we call Miners lettuce.
Cover: They seem to enjoy burrowing into the grass that I have put in the coop but refuse to use the upper storey of the coop, much preferring the grass on the bottom at night.
Calls: This surprised me, the hens are very quiet peeping, the Roo makes what sounds like a frog croak with a sore throat and occasionally what I would say is an alarm call but haven't heard him crow like on the videos.
Docile, they seem to be very calm birds even when my naughty dog put her paw on the wire they barely batted an eyelid, though the Roo definitely has a bit more wildness about him and moves faster around the pen.
