New - Questions about GMO/organic feed / protein content

We are planning to get one-year-old hens mostly for laying. Our research shows us Buff Orphingtons and Black Alstrolorps (spelling?) are both good layers and meat birds. Since this is our
first go at it and we are about 15 minutes from our farm.... we will butcher birds in winter so we don't have to worry about the drive and feeding in winter....unless we get attached to some. I read they are both good with kids and kids could get attached....will see. We are planning on splitting the birds and eggs and costs with a friend for now and any left over eggs we will sell to other friends/family. This is the plan, just trying to decide which route to go on the feed. I say organic non-GMO feed is better even though more expensive because this will be an inconvience anyway and we may as well get the best, otherwise we should just go buy our eggs at the store. Husband is looking at costs and does not know if it is worth it for the more expensive food. We already have an organic apple orchard on farm and plan to sell apples in about 3 years ....thought they would be good to add more healthy food items and fun stuff for kids when they visit the orchard in the fall. Thanks!
