This is the first time I've ever dealt with mites.
We picked up a rooster from a breeder and I didn't think to check.
But it looks like a pretty bad case.
Luckily, he was isolated. He is not too far from my coop though. How easily do these things spread?

I've given him some pour on Cydectin. Has anyone had any experience with this? Is the treatment affective or will he most likely need to be treated again?

Also, should I tell the breeder?

It should not sprerad if the bird is with no contact with other birds. Mites can live off a bird for two weeks, so they should be dead before they reach the other birds.

I would treat again in 1-2 weeks. Do you also have any pictures?

Yes! But, a breeder would know if the bird had mites. You may have gotten scamed because a good breeder would not sell you a mite infested bird. I once got 3 wyandotte hens and they apparently had a few mutes on them and they had none when we bought them. 4 months later that have a small infestation. Stuff like that could happen, but a mite infested bird that was infested when you bought it seams sketchy!

Thanks for all of the advice. It looks terrible, but it's been 24 hours since treatment and there is already much less movement.

Here's an update on our rooster!
I think we are finally mite free. He was treated twice with Cydectin and I did end up dusting him with DE after the mites came back around a second time.
He is still a little inflamed, but looking better and hopefully feeling better too.

Mites can hatch out every 5-7 days, so I would check him frequently if you need to retreat. Have you removed all of his bedding and sprayed the coop before adding new bedding?

Everything has been cleaned up and he has been released to the flock. His bedding was changed every two days when isolated. I noticed the mites hatched again several days after his first treatment. It's been 10 days since his second treatment and there are no sign of them.
