I got a new rooster today from a very nice lady and the bird has been vaccinated for mareks, on cocci. She said I shouldn't quarantine because its healthy. Should I just put it in the coop (in its cage) or keep him in the garage for awhile?

Now, why would someone say you should not quarantine a bird? That makes no sense. I'd quarantine that boy away from the others for 30 days. Mareks' is just one disease he could have had; there are lots of others. I hope those who buy from me quarantine all the birds..what if they just contracted something that I wasn't even aware of and hadn't shown symptoms yet? Yes, quarantine!

I agree, Quarantine the new bird for at least a month before you put the birds together. You can put them next to each other so they can see each other and get used to each other being there. There will be a period of re-establishing the pecking order once the new bird is put in with the existing flock.

Always quarantine. Put him in some kind of cage where he will be able to see daylight and move around. I would isolate for at least 2 weeks. Look for any off symptoms or off behavior: runny nose, sneezing, coughing, lethargy, diarrhea, paleness, etc. Just because he is perfectly fine now doesn't mean he isn't incubating a disease. Diseases, depending on the disease, can take as little as 18 hours to show or as long as 3 weeks to show. He is likely okay, but better safe than sorry.

I wouldn't put them next to each other. Some disease spread on dust particles, particularly respiratory diseases. I isolate birds as far as physically possible and carefully monitor the new birds for 2 weeks.

Basically you're looking for "any" signs of "anything". Mites, lice, wheezing, sneezing, snot, puffy eyes, Just Not Right, whatever.

Best thing is to have him in a separate building, or fairly distant if outdoors; and whenever you go out to do things with the chickens, do your existing flock first, THEN the quarantinee, THEN change clothes and wash hands and wash off your shoes if the quarantine pen was one you could walk around in.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat
