New rooster, Quarantine (SP) questions *PICS*

Yes, that's what he is, very gentle. If he bred to a Barred rock hen, what would the bird look like? a regular barred rock?

Does he look like a healthy bird so far? He is acting like one, crowing all morning. My other rooster that I got (had some mental issues) didn't crow for atleast 2 months after we had him.

All new roosters I get are quarantine for a month or a month and two weeks depending on the status particularly if the roo has been in shows, I would opt for the longer quarantine.

Just keep him away from your flock for a month and you would be ok.

I wouldn't put them next to each other. Some disease spread on dust particles, particularly respiratory diseases. I isolate birds as far as physically possible and carefully monitor the new birds for 2 weeks.

I guess I've been lucky.
This run is closed off from the chicken yard. Most of the pullets are in their coop.

The main flock is mostly in their yard.

Must be nice to have the space and time to quarantine new birds for a month or more. Wish I had that luxury

It's not really a matter of space. The only bird I ever purchased as an adult was quarantined in a large dog crate in the basement. He probably thought he was in heaven after the way he'd been kept previously. I will never buy another one, period, ever. It was too stressful, watching for symptoms for the five weeks, but I would absolutely never buy a bird and add it without quarantine, risking my entire flock in the process. Even quarantine isn't perfect, but it's the least we can do to try to keep disease out of the flock. Have seen too much heartache from ignoring quarantine protocols here on BYC.
