Getting a new rooster tonight and I’m ready for introduction with a dog crate. My question is…can he sleep in the crate? (In the enclosed run, of course). He can’t “roost” in it. Am I being too weird about this?

My plan was to keep him in the crate, in the run tonight and tomorrow, then let him follow the girls into the coop tomorrow at dusk.

Thoughts or advice?

sounds good. I use crates for injured birds/ introducing new chicks, and it seems to work.

Also…I know the people I’m getting him from and their flock. They are all seemingly healthy. If I should still quarantine him, the crate is my only option. Can he live in it for awhile if needed?

How old are your hens, how old is the rooster? Number of birds? Any other roosters?

I have added a lot of roosters, IMO it is the easiest integration. A bit of bluster, and they are in love by morning.

I tried to do it just like you once, but I got called to the house. I must have not had the latch tight, and when I got back, he was out, strutting his stuff, and they were following him.

If he is just a chick, you need to be more careful.

My girls are 6 months old. The rooster is about 8-10 months old.
Too young?
My girls are very happy right now (I have 6)

Here’s the new guy. I’m going to have to let him out into the run tonight when the girls go to bed. Is that ok, or a disastrous plan?

That is what I would do, there might be a bit of bluster, but I would expect them to be in love by morning. It will change the behavior to you some what, especially if you have pets. But I like it.

I prefer to keep them visible but physically separated for at least a couple days. You can gauge how they act with the wire in between them before you have them in physical contact.

If you try the crash-course, just be ready to pull him out if anyone acts crazy. I've had hens mob a strange rooster before, and some young roosters have the manners of Attila the Hun when they meet hens the first time.
